GUAM - Guam Memorial Hospital's efforts to get the Joint Commission's seal of approval aren't going unnoticed by the international community.
Under the headline, "Guam Memorial Hospital seeks accreditation", the global medical tourism website Treatment Abroad reports that GMH "is making strides to gain international accreditation"...and..."has been making a big push to finally get reaccredited by the Joint Commission, a process that culminated in the submission of an application for accreditation on June 30."
In May, Guam News Factor reported that GMH's Medical Executive Committee had fired its MRI contractor, MR Imaging Group over safety, procedure and personnel violations found during a Joint Commission fact-finding inspection. Sources told the Factor that the termination of services was part and parcel to the hospital's efforts to clean up practices deemed unworthy of the Joint Commission's nod.
In mid-July local leaders were suggesting that about $100 million in bond proceeds could be partially redirected to hospital accreditation efforts. The proceeds have been freed up for capital improvements after the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved Guam for a $104 million loan/grant package.
